Whimsical White Mountain Winter Elopement | New Hampshire Wedding Photographer

"I would ride with you upon the wind and dance upon the mountains like a flame."

There's a phrase photographers like to say that goes, 'moments over mountains' - it's the idea that the real, intimate moments between a couple in love are far more important than any breathtaking scenery (like mountaintops, for example) that may take up the frame behind them.

Well, in the case of this styled elopement, I didn't have to choose between moments or mountains. I got both.

In the dead of winter in New England (our off-season), many wedding professionals like to create and participate in styled shoots. A styled shoot is simply a staged wedding, and it's put together by vendors like photographers, florists, cake artists and the like to bring visions of ours to life - visions for a wedding that we haven't yet been a part of; visions that let our creative minds run free. It gives us the opportunity to create new relationships with vendors we haven't yet met, to submit our work to wedding publications to be featured, and to inspire other brides and grooms as they envision how their own wedding will look.

This winter, I put together a whimsical styled shoot in the mountains of New Hampshire with a talented group of New England vendors (tagged at the end of this blog post!). It was an elopement-style with a real-life couple (our "groom" is my boyfriend's older brother), who are engaged and will be eloping themselves this spring to Iceland with close family at their side. The lovely couple, Kate and Connor, not only fit my vision for this rustic, bohemian shoot; I also knew it would be a special opportunity for them to have "wedding photos" of their own, given the fact that their actual wedding will be rather untraditional.

Our team of vendors steered away from using a traditional wedding venue and instead chose a small, rustic inn in the mountains of New Hampshire that would allow us to focus on unique details and the development of this love story. (Which also happened to have a gorgeous mountain backdrop outside!)

My inspiration drew from deep, earthy colors; long-sleeve lace and accents of burgundy; a cozy sweetheart table set in front of a fireplace (huge props to our planner, Nicole and florist, Jackie for designing this scene so perfectly); and earthy florals and greens straight from a forest.

Our cake artist crafted an incredibly unique cake inspired by a wedding gown, with intricate hand-stitched sugar lace and a few beauties from our floral arrangements to top it off.

Our calligrapher created beautiful stationary pieces, including a sketch of the inn and a special creation of hers - romantic vow books. Timeless and elegant, vow books are perfect for intimate celebrations like elopements, and so beautiful to photograph. They are a special keepsake that a couple can look back on with fond memories of their lifelong pledge, for years to come.

Speaking of vows... since our "bride" and "groom" were engaged to be married in a few months themselves, we asked the couple to write love letters to each other to read in place of vows. Kate and Connor beautifully told each other how they envisioned their own wedding day in Iceland to be, and how excited they were to spend the rest of their lives together. It was a special way to add a personal touch to this staged, yet somehow real, celebration.

From cozy, fireside champagne toasts, to a snowy lakeside portrait session with mountains as our only witness, this styled elopement was organic, romantic, and absolutely perfect.

I just love it when moments and mountains collide.
