Rocky Gorge and Kancamagus Highway Engagement | White Mountain National Forest, NH
“I have loved her, my little wanderer, with a mind full of wild forests and eyes that await adventures.” // Conny Cernik
How sweet it is to see loved ones find their person and dedicate the rest of their days to living, learning and growing in love.
My younger cousin Sarah (okay, just one year younger) is the closest-in-age cousin I have, and when she announced her engagement and asked if I might be her wedding photographer, naturally I excitedly accepted. Some of my favorite childhood memories with Sarah include family camping trips to Pawtuckaway State Park, climbing rocks and exploring the woods of New Hampshire. There was a camping excursion that rained for days straight, and after popping open a bag of Sun Chips over board games, lo and behold, the clouds did break and the sun poked its way through. (Remember that, Sarah?)
It seemed fitting, then, that we retreated back to the woods of New Hampshire for Sarah and Mike’s engagement session - as they share a love of the White Mountains, hiking, campfires, and road trips. Sarah noted that they are particularly fond of the Kancamagus, a scenic byway that passes through the White Mountain National Forest with river views, tumbling falls, and plenty of mountainous lookouts. And so, to the Kanc we went.
We spent much of our time at the Rocky Gorge Scenic Area, wandering through the trees and playing on the rocks beneath the bridge while the river roared around us. (Quite loudly, actually.) The sun poked in and out on a glorious spring day as we hopped back on the Kancamagus Highway to find a few more lookouts along the White Mountains of Albany, New Hampshire. I even convinced them to step into one swampy marsh that had us all squishing our shoes into wet grass - but I couldn't pass up some conifer layering and one neat squiggly tree. (Worth it, right guys?!)
Sarah and Mike are no strangers to the deep commitment of loving someone through struggle and coming out the other side of the forest strong. An Airman of the United States Air Force, Mike’s training and career kept the two apart for stretches of time - and yet, they knew they were in love when Sarah flew down to Texas to support Mike as he graduated from the military.
They each found their person, and I couldn’t be more excited to join them on this journey and watch, camera in hand, as they celebrate their promises this September among the mountains of Sugar Hill, New Hampshire. Back in that place of campfires, days spent hiking, and nights spent reminiscing on the mountains they’ve climbed together, side by side.
Here’s to a lifetime of adventures ahead, Sarah + Mike!
